Some of us have no trouble falling asleep, taking as little as one to two minutes to enter twilight zone sleep. As in the case for all human functions, there is quite a bit of variation among us as to our capacity to sleep. Some are simply better at it than others, being able to dim their arousal switches with annoying ease and have their sleep center dominate within minutes. The vast majority of us take sleep for granted. It is just something that we do, like eating or taking a shower. But as we have learned, getting a good night’s sleep is a problem of major proportions for a substantial part of our population.Optimal human health only exists if sleep is entirely healthy. More than fifty percent of Americans suffer from one or more chronic sleep disorders. “I am tired,” “I have fatigue,” “I have no energy,” “I am exhausted” are all the phrases used by people to describe how they feel when discussing a sleep problem with their doctor. There are different types of sleep disorders:* Sleep Apnea - Between 70-90 percent of those who suffer from it are men, mostly middle-ages, and usually overweight. The vast majority snore heavily. The problem is a neuromuscular one that results in partial closing of an airway called the nasal pharynx while one sleeps. Apnea is Greek in origin and that literally means “without breath.” It is estimated that 30 million Americans snore, and of that, 2.5 million of them suffer from sleep apnea. Those who suffer from sleep apnea actually stop breathing as they sleep, perhaps as often as several hundred times per night.* Narcolepsy - It is a chronic neurological disorder caused by abnormal brain chemistry, which leads to a perplexing constellation of symptoms that may include on more of the following: severe sleepiness, vivid dream imagery upon falling asleep or waking up (hypnagogic hallucinations), waking up paralyzed (sleep paralysis), and sudden onset of temporary muscle weakness (cataplexy). The most common symptom is falling asleep at inappropriate times and places. Narcolepsy most often comes in the mid-teenage years and affects women and men equally.* Insomnia - Failure to get an entire night’s sleep on most nights. It affects one out of ten Americans, which is about 40 million. Insomnia can take the form of being unable to fall asleep when you first go to bed or waking during the night and being unable to go back to sleep. While insomnia can be very frustrating, it is hardly dangerous and is usually only a temporary annoyance. Chronic insomnia is often a symptom of a serious underlying medical disorder. Fifty percent of insomnia cases can be attributed to depression and psychological disorders, such as anxiety, stress, or grief.* Restless Legs Syndrome - The onset of an attack usually accompanies inactivity such as occurs on long drives, sitting fir an extended period, and in sleep. Women are afflicted more often than men because of a correlation with menses, pregnancy, and menopause. When restless legs occur during sleep, it awakens its victim, causing insomnia. Suffers are known as nightwalkers since they are aroused by their aching legs that they walk the floor night after night, an activity that tends to relieve the symptoms. For each of us, every single day of our lives, the need for sleep is a powerful biologic force. Every twenty-four hours or so, we simply must lie down and rest for a period of time or we will be unable to continue to function. This regular requirement for sleep is so pressing, so demanding that, though it may be delayed or deferred, sleep cannot be denied completely. We all spend one-third of our lives asleep, it is a basic requirement of life. Sleep disorders mean poor sleep which limits the ability to function and to enjoy life.

Supplements For Body Building
By: Michael Rad
This article offers a list of supplements which are not only effective, but efficient. This also helps you in optimizing your efforts for body building. Creatine Monohydrate: in last ten years it has been found that this substance is one of the largest advances in supplying supplements for body building. Creatine monohydrate is very effective for weight gains and it has been reported that consumption must be 20 grams in a day for a week or two, depends upon the size of the body.Vanadyl: It has capability to alleviate anti insulin and also efficient for carbohydrate consumption improvement. Researches have shown that Vanadyl enhances nitrogen preservation in body builders and for other athletes.Mahuang: Mahuang extracts includes various amount of Ephedrine Isomers, which develops perceptible anti-catabolic and ergogenic effects. Mahuang should be consumed in small doses to develop patience, tolerance and also enhance its scope for safety for the individuals who basically are very much responsive with the side effects.Leucine: This substance is most effective supplements for body builders who do hard training as it contains useful amino acids. Leucine in diet provides a substrate for metabolism for muscle at the time when cellular power is diminishing. Ketoisocaporate (KIC): This nutrient is efficient for developing important anabolic effects. It is a combination of Keto acid and Leucine and crops up unsurprisingly in liver and muscle metabolism. KIC decreases urine urea nitrogen preservation, and in long run it improves muscle mass.Alpha-Ketoglutarate: This substance includes magnesium, calcium and potassium, its salts have been proved to enhance glutamine stored in muscles, and most effectively when the bodybuilder is hospitalized. It has obvious effect for increasing lean mass and alleviates body fat.Whey Protein: It provides athletes with other sources of protein as a clear improvement. Previously it was egg protein which was the best nutrient for the body builders but it has some limitations like inclusion of nonessential amino acids. Leucine was very useful in high intense training and also essential for restructuring, whey protein is extremely high in Leucine, and includes almost more than twice than that of egg protein. Beta-Ecdysterone: This is a plant sterol which improves muscle deposition. It increases nitrogen equilibrium in mass trained athletes. Hydroxytic Acid (HCA): However it is not a thermogenic agent, HCA hinders with hepatic triglyceride synthesis by restraining citrate lyase. The proportion for HCA in diet controls carbohydrate transfer to fat. HCA also assist in improving liver glycogen which contribute in longer period of anabolism by sustaining serum glucose, and further reduces discharge of catabolic stress hormones.Ornithune Alpha-Ketoglutarate (OKG): It has been proved to be one of the most anabolic of nutrients. It has the ability to restrain muscle wasting at the time of harsh sickness and also reduces nitrogen loss. These supplements for body building supplies calories accurately because of their frequent ideal physiological purposes. These nutrients may prove in particular important for body builders because of their dietary status for athletes and improves growth, muscular contraction and energy facilitation.

“Functional Strength”: a matter for Bodybuilding
"Functional strength": There are those words again. They rank right up there with "quality muscle" when it comes to people in the fitness industry uttering meaningless jargon that sounds profound on the surface. Of what part of my weight lifting-built strength isn't functional? At the risk of sounding like a macho jerk; if I wanted to, I could probably slam my fist through the wall that's behind my computer monitor. That's pretty functional.I've again come across a fitness article in which the author touts his fifteen minute bodyweight workout as being somehow superior to the results obtainable with weight workouts. He claims it will provide more "usable" or "functional" fitness. The last time I checked, all levels of fitness were functional and able to be used – as long as the person in question has a fully functioning body. Lest you be lured away from the best body-improving endeavor you can engage (resistance training), take the morning calisthenics advice with a grain of salt.I anticipate a huge swing away from the current "core training" and "functional strength" fitness fads in the near future. Research is beginning to reveal how important it is for us to build muscle mass and strength to improve our health as we age. I'm sorry, but doing one-legged bodyweight squats or balancing on a Swiss ball just isn't going to cut it for building the kind of strength that staves off the ravages of aging. When I was twenty years old, I went through my first tour of BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL) Training. I entered that training with painfully skinny legs. Those undersized underpinnings didn't produce much "functional strength" at all when it was called upon to function on a long swim. Our regular two mile ocean swims were done with a stealthy side-stroke by propelling through the water with swim fins. Kicking through miles of ocean water using fins requires thigh strength – the kind of strength I was woefully lacking. I swam so slowly that I caught hypothermia which led to pneumonia from inhaling seawater. That was after my swim buddy and I received extensive punishment from the instructors for allowing too large a gap to grow between us during the swim. I was an embarrassingly slow swimmer. Two years later, I went through a second tour of the training (long story). This time, I was the second fastest swimmer in the entire class. In fact, I was punished by the instructors for getting too far ahead of my swim buddy. What made the difference? How did I go from being one of the slowest BUD/S swimmers in 1984 to one of the fastest in 1986?Well, during the interim between my two tours of BUD/S, I'd befriended a bodybuilder and began regularly going to the gym with him. He was one of those rare workout people who actually enjoyed building his lower body more than his upper. Aside from doing squats, he really loved leg extensions and we worked them hard. Those heavily weighted leg extensions built strength in the exact areas of my thighs that were used to propel me through the water while kicking with fins. So effective were those extensions that I went from underachieving in ocean swims to being far above average in them. In other words – weightlifting built ‘functional strength'.The next time someone tells you that moving from one bodyweight exercise to another within fifteen minutes each morning is superior to traditional bodybuilding workouts, consider that they might try to sell you beachfront property in Montana. If they cite the fact that their workout is difficult as being evidence that it's effective, consider one of my principles:"A successful workout might be difficult, but that doesn't mean any difficult workout is successful."Most of all, if someone tells you their workout produces more "functional strength" as compared with weight lifting workouts, tell them you already have a fully functional body – you're just looking to add more strength.
What Everyone Ought To Know About Alcohol Detox
By: Kausik Dutta
As the years go on, there is one problem that our society still deals with: alcoholism. Once an alcoholic has identified him or herself as such, then it’s time that they reach out for help for their addiction. The majority of the time, the addict’s family intervenes before the alcoholic comes to term with his or her own problems. This can mean that the alcoholic’s family or friends speak to them about seeking help for their problems. It can also mean that a more formal approach is used, such as an intervention. An intervention gives the alcoholic’s loved ones the chance to give the addict an ultimatum: choose your addiction, or choose your family and friends. After an alcoholic is ready to seek help for his or her addiction, he or she is faced with the task of choosing an alcohol detox program to help them to stop abusing alcohol. Detox is going “cold turkey;” this is when an addict abruptly stops ingesting alcohol. Also, this cold turkey approach is used in conjunction with different drugs which are used to minimize withdrawal symptoms. Detox happens in a rehabilitation center setting; this is where a detox may be the most effective, as rehab centers are fully stocked with the drugs and staff needed to help an addict get off of his or her drug.Detox can happen in many different ways, depending upon the degree of alcoholism present. Drug treatment centers use detoxification to help to treat the physical effects of prolonged drug use. At a drug treatment center, detox commonly takes about a week to complete; after this time, the patient will not experience the extreme physical withdrawal symptoms. After a patient is finished with detox, relapse may occur, especially if the recovering alcoholic receives no further addiction treatment. One further treatment that many alcoholics participate in at rehab centers and elsewhere is group therapy or psychotherapy to help combat the mental ailing that often accompanies rehab from alcohol. These group therapy meetings will also give the recovering alcoholic the tools that he or she needs to combat his or her addiction and prevent relapse. The most popular group therapy is Alcoholics Anonymous, but there are many other support groups to aide in addiction recovery.Whether you yourself are an addict, or a loved one is an addict, you will most likely need help figuring out what drug treatment program is right for you. Stepping Stone Centers provides you with the most helpful resources to help you to find a drug treatment program ideal for you or your loved one’s situation.

The Strong Abdominal Workout
By: Li Ming Wong
When beginning an abdominal workout routine, for most people the goal is simple: a flatter abdominal. While a smooth, flat abdominal looks good, it is less of an accomplishment if the the abdominal muscles have not gained any strength. In addition to slimming down around the outer abdominals, it is also important to build strength in the core abdominals. Below are some abdominal exercises that work out the core to build strong muscles throughout the abdomen. As with any workout routine, be sure to consult a professional before beginning and always warm up properly to avoid injury.Tone Your TorsoBegin this abdominal exercise on all fours, knees and hands on the floor. Keep your abdominal pulled in and extend your left arm out in front of you (football fans, imagine a referee signaling first down). Keep this arm outstretched as you extend your right leg out behind you. Switch arms and legs, and repeat for an entire set. Take particular care not to let your pelvis sway out of position.Butt BurnerYou will need to lie on your back for this exercise. Use a mat or towel to cushion your spine. Bend your knees so your feet are flat on the floor, and position your arms at your sides. Squeeze your buttocks as you lift your pelvis off the floor. Keep the rest of your body in line. Raise your pelvis to about forty-five degrees, so your upper body from your head to your knees makes a straight, flat ramp. Hold this for three to five seconds before slowly lowering your pelvis back to the floor. Repeat for an entire set.Crunchless CrunchThis abdominal exercise is fairly simple in theory but can be fairly difficult to perform. Essentially, it involves trying to pull the belly button in towards the spine. This can be tricky, as it involves using muscles which you may not be used to activating. To start, either lie or on your abdominal or kneel. You might want to try both ways and see which helps you feel the exercise better. Relax your body as much as possible, then try to use only the lower abdominals to move your belly button toward your spine. Hold for ten seconds. If this feels easy, hold for a longer period. The goal is to hold the contraction until you either cannot feel it, or you feel other muscles working harder than the transverse abdominus. When you feel this, let the contraction out.Scissor KicksThis abdominal exercise also requires lying on the floor. Position your hands under your butt, keeping your back pressed against the floor. Slowly raise one leg to a height of about ten inches, then slowly lower it back to the floor. As your lower one leg, raise the other. Repeat this motion for an entire set. Maintaining control throughout is important, not allowing momentum to get the better of you. Your upper body should remain on the floor through the entire move. These are just a few of all the strength building abdominal exercises out there. If you are looking to build strength in your midsection, look for any exercise that works your core, especially the transverse abdominal muscles. Many components of Pilates are good for this also.

Ayurveda and the Raw Food Die
By: Lara Greene
Ayurveda and the Raw Food Diet A rough English translation of the Sanskrit word ‘Ayurveda’ means ‘the knowledge of life’. Ayurveda is the pursuit of the harmony of mind, body and spirit. Once these three are in equilibrium, man is at peace with his external and internal universe. For this, one has to have a link between the spirit and the body. The principle of the Raw Food Diet is that the pure and natural food will render your body cleansed, alkalized and normalized. This will enable you to establish the link between your body and spirit. There is an inherent link between Ayurveda and the Raw Food Diet that you need to understand in order to help your body and spirit unite. There are three ‘doshas’ according to the Ayurveda. These doshas determine the kind of diet you will indulge in. they are called vita, pitta and kapha.Vata: This is under the elements air and ether. The people governed by this dosha are generally thin and prone to sickness. They cannot take much strain and need to take a lot of rest.Pitta: this is under the elements fire and water. The ones governed by this dosha are generally intelligent and sharp on the uptake. They are healthy and are of medium dimensions. Kapha: This being the dosha under earth and water, makes the people under it tend to the heavier side. Such people are also quite optimistic. The ancient Ayurveda claims that every human being is under a particular dosha and should try to eat according to that. Given below are the Raw Food Diets for the three doshas:For balancing Vata: Sweet fruits, cucumber, apricots, grapes, berries, melons, asparagus, beets, garlic, avocado, bananas radishes, and zucchini. For aggravating Vata: Dried fruits, apples, cauliflower, cranberries, broccoli, cabbage, pears, watermelons and raw onions. For balancing Pitta: Sweet fruits, cucumber, okra avocado, figs, mango, coconut prunes, sweet and bitter vegetables, cabbage, potatoes. For aggravating Pitta: Sour fruits, berries, plums, oranges bananas, lemon, pungent vegetables, garlic, onions. For balancing Kapha: Apples, broccoli apricots, berries, peaches cherries, cranberries, mangos, pungent and bitter vegetables, celery, garlic, onion. For aggravating Kapha: Sweet and sour fruits, melons, papaya, sweet and juicy vegetables, potatoes, tomatoes, bananas and coconut Apart from these, there are many Ayurvedic directives on diet. These are in accordance with the Raw Food Diet, for example:• Consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains during their respective seasons.• Fasting at least once a week.• Having a diet according to one’s dosha.• Do not consume carbonated, alcoholic beverages. Stick to herbal beverages like tea, juices etc.
